Julio survived his young life; it wasn’t enjoyable, but it was bearable. When he was an infant, his mother witnessed the death of his father, and spiraled into depression and drugs that landed her in prison. He was so neglected as she struggled, his grandparents found the baby alone in deplorable conditions; he was raised by his grandparents, visiting his mother behind bars.
The hardest part about being homeless is a lack of facilities, lack of sleep, and being stuck out in the elements.

While his grandma was kind to him, sometimes his grandfather would put him in the corner for days on end. By the age of nine, Julio had started sneaking beers and smoking cigarettes, then eventually picked up his own 20-year heroin addiction.

While he’s off opiates now, he is still in active addiction but yearns for a better life. His children are all grown except a daughter living nearby turning 18 soon. Last year, the Nomad Alliance referred him to the newly opened pod community – housing resulting from persistent advocacy by dozens of his fellow comrades from the streets clamoring for sanctioned campground legislation to the city council and state legislature with Nomad. He was housed for six months until he was kicked out – a late night check on his whereabouts past curfew asserted he was not at work, but he claims he was on the job site and worked a full shift, but was in the break room at the time. Julio landed back on the streets. Julio was hit and nearly killed by a car in a vehicle pedestrian accident, and while he was in the hospital racking up a huge bill, fighting for his life, he was cited for jaywalking. This turned into a warrant, and then a 45-day jail sentence. He was recently released. He’s been working on clearing his warrants and yearns for a better life. Julio is an entrepreneur and hustler; he cleans windows for people on North Temple, is a mechanic by trade, and states that he is a “jack of all trades”, a handyman. He dreams of getting a home in Humboldt, near the Redwoods, where he can have sanctuary and grow for a dispensary.
Goals:
Julio wants to get home to Humboldt, near redwood trees, where he can have a home and grow for a dispensary.
