Separated from his parents at the tender age of just 8, Moses found himself on the run. Literally. Born in South Sudan, Moses was forced to run for his life as a young boy when the government sent the military to his tribes area. This would be the last time he’d see his family in person and a decades-long life of hardships.

“I want to see myself doing better, stay away from the street. I don’t want to be homeless or have all these problems running after me, with people thinking I’m kind of a useless person doing drugs. I know myself and I am not doing anything like that. I just want to have a life and a place.”

Moses ran his way from Sudan to Ethiopia where he entered a refugee camp. Unfortunately, war broke out once again, this time in Ethiopia. Moses again made his way on foot running from Ethiopia to Kenya. As a refugee in Kenya, Moses was able to take part in an opportunity by The World Vision to come to the United States of America at age 20. In those precious years between fleeing his home and leaving Kenya for the US, Moses, like most young boys in the region, at 12 years old, was kidnapped and forced by the local militia to be a child soldier. He regrets all the lives he was forced to take, and the psychological effects still haunt him to this day. Moses has seen horrors that no human, let alone any young boy, should ever have to endure.

Upon arriving to the USA at age 20, Moses found himself with both a job and a home. He had his very own apartment! “I was working, I had a life, my own apartment, and my own car.” It was the new start he only dreamed of and one he fought so hard to survive for; the nightmare was finally over. Or so he had hopefully believed. Working for the US Postal Service, he sorted mail for 5 years. In 2012, the post office was too slow he was told and he was laid off. Unable to secure a new job in time, he lost everything. Moses tragically ended up homeless and living on the streets in 2013 where he’s been for the past 11 years. He met a girl from New Zealand in 2014 whom he shares one child with and she is his partner still today, both longing for a safe home and simple roof over their heads. This past February Moses was struck by a car while walking and ended up needing surgery, 3 months in Sunstone recovering, only to still have lingering pain in his foot.

Moses has a great love and talent for music and creates original beats for people to put lyrics on. He used to listen to music “a lot,” he says and loved creating. He put his work online at one point and said he was seeing success with various companies and apps commenting on his good work. “I became part of something successful. Hopes came crashing down once again though as he found himself the victim of identity theft, taking his beats and access to them with him. Something he believes he could benefit from legal help for. Feeling threatened for years and encountering so many hard life blows, Moses says ”I feel like I’m still in a war zone here.”

Remarkably, Moses still finds hope to hold onto from deep within. He is resilient and strong.  “I want to see myself doing better, stay away from the street. I don’t want to be homeless or have all these problems running after me thinking I’m kind of a useless person doing drugs.”

He continues on “I know myself and I am not doing anything like that. I just want to have a life and a place.”

His simple, but very important dream: To just do better.
